THE date is June, 1914 and the crowds were out in Southampton to watch a pageant in St Mary Street.
As the procession crossed tramlines near St Mary’s Church, spectators crammed the pavements outside the many individual shops filling the street in the days on the eve of the outbreak of the First World War.
