SOME of them had only been playing jazz for six months, yet their school jazz band achieved national recognition.

The 25-strong group at Cantell School, pictured here on February 14, 1990, were the winners of the Daily Telegraph Young Jazz 90 competition.

Their success secured them £100, a workshop with nationally known jazz musicians and an appearance in the National Jazz in Education Festival in Manchester.

Leading the Cantell jazz effort was then-head of music Ian Townson

“Half of them have only been learning six months, but others have been learning two years,” he said.
