WEM Town Council has been busy making arrangements for this year’s VE Day celebrations.

Victory in Europe (VE) Day marked the end of the Second World War in Europe, with the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany on April 8, 1945.

Every year communities up and down the country mark the day with celebrations, and Wem is no different.

For this year, several events will be happening in Wem, as discussed at the full council meeting, held on Thursday, February 27.

Throughout the town, bell ringers will take part in the ringing out for peace at 7pm.

The Air Cadets have said they will not be involved in the event as they have a prior engagement, and it still remains to be seen if the Army Cadets will be involved.

But Wem (Wem Amateur Dramatic And Operatic Society) ADOS are willing to support it.
Bunting and other decorations will be put up throughout the town, and youth organisations and the Royal British Legion will have stalls on the day.

In the case of wet weather, the Methodist church will be available as a venue, and church members will be happy to sell teas and coffees with disposable cups, as well as sausage and bacon baps.

Councillor Paul Johnson said there is an eagerness in the town for the event to go ahead.

“They do want it,” said Cllr Johnson. “There’s great respect for the people who have fought in the wars and lost their lives.”
