THE British Railways B4 0-4-0 tank engine was returning to the scene of its former glories when it pulled into the old Ocean Terminal in Southampton’s Eastern Docks in March 1963.
At the time the steam engine was one of the last remaining of 14 similar locomotives used on shunting duties in the docks from the 1890s until after the Second World War.
The engine was pulling carriages full of members of the Locomotive Club of Great Britain on a special excursion to the port.
