At about 11 am on Sunday, February 9, storm Clara decided that a very large Holm Oak tree in Compton Street had been there long enough.

So, it blew it down right across Compton Street and completely blocked the road. It inevitably took with it overhead electricity and telephone cables, thus removing power and communication from many of the residents.

This letter is to convey thanks to the teams of people who responded so well and quickly to deal with the disaster. The Hampshire County Council personnel worked tirelessly to cut up and remove the tree from the road. This allowed vehicle access to be available in the early evening.

A special gratitude also to the Southern Electricity staff for their efforts to replace overhead cables in atrocious weather conditions. Power was restored to the village by 8pm.

On behalf of all residents of Compton Street I would like our thanks to be recorded for a tremendous and speedy response by all involved, including the fire service and police.
