THE Met Office has updated its weather warning for Storm Dennis this weekend.

Initially a yellow warning for wind was issued for the Hampshire from 12pm until midnight on Saturday.

Now the warning for “very strong winds” will be in force from 10am on Saturday until midnight on Sunday.

The Met Office has said gusts of 50mph are “expected widely inland” while along the coast gusts of between 60 t0 70mph are “likely.”

A separate warning for heavy rain will be in force from 12pm on Saturday until 9pm on Sunday evening.

There is potential for flooding, delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport with a “slight chance” of power cuts and damage to buildings, the Met Office has said.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “The strongest winds are likely to be on Saturday afternoon and evening, with a lull overnight, before increasing again during Sunday. Gusts of 50 mph are expected widely inland. Around the coasts, especially in the west and south, gusts of 60-70 mph are likely.

“The strong winds will be accompanied by heavy rain at times, leading to particularly poor driving conditions.”

The warnings for Storm Dennis come just days after Storm Ciara swept through Hampshire.

A driver was killed when a tree crashed onto a car near Winchester during the height of Storm Ciara.
