A ROMSEY shoe shop that has been running for nine years is set to shutdown at the end of the month.

Anya, Bell Street, will close its doors for the final time in early February due to the "lease coming to an end".

A sign in the shop window reads: "I would like to announce that after nine happy years in Romsey, Anya shoes will close its doors for the last time in February.

"The shop's lease has come to an end and I feel it's time for me to concentrate more on my two shops in Haslemere, Surrey.

"It's been a huge pleasure to have served so many lovely customers."

The sign adds: "We look forward to helping you find your final pair of shoes at Anya."

An employee who works in the shop added: "On January 28 there will not be any staff in Anya and at the beginning of February it will be closed."

Cllr Janet Burnage, who represents Romsey Cupernham on the borough council, said: "I have shopped in there before and and it is a shame they have decided to close their Romsey store, because it has been lovely to have in town.

"It is a nice independent shop and the staff at the store have always been friendly, chatty and willing to help you find a pair of shoes."

Cllr Nik Daas, who represents Romsey Abbey on the borough council, said: "It is disappointing to hear the shop is going, but I think there will be a new up and coming store or eatery which will allow Romsey to continue to thrive.

"There are lots of businesses flocking to town and I have no doubt that unit will be filled up very soon."

He added: "Compared to other towns, we are doing really well and residents continue to shop in Romsey regularly, not just once or twice a month but every week, which is great to see people are still supporting our local businesses."

The manager of Anya has been contacted for comment.
