THERE is no need for unemployment in the UK by the state of the streets, we need at least half a million road sweepers and litter pickers to clean the place up.

I know many people of good intention are doing this voluntarily but how can we claim we are a civilised country when our streets parks and open spaces are strewn with the garbage of modern life.

Whenever I meet visitors from other country's one of their first observations is, why do you allow your country to become so littered?

I always make a weak joke saying: "Would you like a job as a street cleaner, would you need instructions or will you pick it up as you go along?"

But in reality I am embarrassed by the place and I think most Brit's would agree with that emotion.
