A ROMSEY delicatessen has been slammed in a damning report after health inspectors found different meats vacuum packed in the same bag.

A report from Environmental Health chiefs, who inspected Luc Purveyor Of Fine Foods in Latimer Street, Romsey, said a "major improvement" was necessary and gave it a food hygiene rating of 1 out of 5.

Inspectors, who worked with Test Valley Borough Council, discovered the delicatessen was packaging different meats in the same bag which could result in transferring "allergens".

The officer who carried out the inspection noted that although Luc Purveyor Of Fine Foods labelled the food they "vacuum packed in house", they failed to follow the Food Standards Agency's guidance of a "maximum of ten days".

The report said: "Instead you are using an original manufacturers date or one with no reference to either."

Inspectors revealed most of the cheeses seen on November 6 were past their best before date, with five pieces dated November 5 and one dated October 10.

Officers later found both the toilet door and the door by the sink unit, "which was propped open with a stool, were open. These must both be kept shut at all times".

The report added: "Lavatories must not be open directly into rooms in which food is handled. "

Inspectors also found there was not a sign visible to customers stating "ask if you have any query over allergens or ingredients in any of the foods we offer", which was noted in their last inspection back in May.

The officer said: "I understand that since your inspection Trading Standards have visited you and have provided you with a sign."

Following the inspection, the Environmental Health officers recommended the delicatessen keep a daily diary and four weekly reviews up to date.

They added the delicatessen should buy a standard diary, record temperatures and sign a page each day.

Luc Purveyor Of Fine Foods has been contacted for comment.

On their website, the delicatessen claims to offer "fantastic wines, speciality cheeses, and superb charcuterie (cured meats) sliced to your requirements".
