PLANS to extend a Victorian cottage in Winchester have been refused by the city council.

Jonathan Macey had applied to demolish the current extension on his Culver Road property and replace it with a single rear extension, and two-storey rear and side extensions.

But after the plans received nine objections, they were turned away at a planning committee on November 14.

Culver Road resident Frances Irving wrote to the city council: "I welcome new comers to this area, but I have concern that the approximated five metre roof extension at the anticipated height will block much light out of my main front room, as the extension is opposite my main front window and it is a very narrow single track road.

"I feel the proposal is oversized for the surrounding heritage housing, and will stand out very out of character to the housing around. I think that the work involved will block the road for many months which will cause traffic issues."

A spokesperson for the City of Winchester Trust said the trust had no comment on the application.
