The football season finished that year with Saints in seventh in the Football League on 66 points, securing their place in the UEFA Cup 1982-1983 First Round.
Tottenham Hotspur retained the FA Cup after beating Queens Park Rangers in a replay. The initial match finished 1-1.
Despite their success in the FA Cup, Tottenham narrowly missed out on the League Cup when they were beaten by Liverpool 3-1 in the final.
Liverpool also won the Football League with 87 points, second-place Ipswich Town finished on 83.
The 1982 FIFA World Cup kicked off in Spain on June 13 when Belgium beat Argentina 1-0. The tournament was won by Italy on July 11 when they defeated West Germany 3-1 in the final.
