A VIDEO shows a car going up in giant flames along a Southampton road.

It comes after Hampshire Fire and Rescue said it received numerous calls to a car on fire at Ashurst Close in Weston, Southampton, in the early hours of this morning.

The fire, which according to firefighters left a Vauxhall Astra "severely damaged", was reported just after midnight.

Two fire engine crews from Hightown rushed to the scene to put out the fire.

Multiple residents said they heard a loud bang during the night before seeing the car parked along the street in flames.

One resident said: "My niece told me there were fire engines out here. All I could see was a load of white smoke out here.”

A witness said: "We heard a big bomb before midnight and looked out our window to see this very big fire. We saw fire engines arrive. Our daughter got no sleep."

Another said: "I was woken up to a big bang and saw the car alight. It was a raging fire."

One resident living nearby said: "All I heard were a couple of loud bangs which woke me up, and my dog growled at the noises. It does concern me if someone has set a car on fire here as it's usually a fairly quiet area."

One person said: "We saw the fire and rescue attend a very big fire. It was scary."

A spokesperson for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We received a call at 12.31am and sent two engines from Hightown to Ashurst Close, where there was a fire involving a severely damaged Vauxhall Astra.

"Police were informed and it was confirmed it was an abandoned vehicle. They also are attending the scene today [Wednesday]. We received a stop message at 1.10am."

At the time of reporting, a spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: "We have been made aware of a car fire in Ashurst Close at 12.40am. Car is an Astra. Enquiries into the cause are ongoing at this time."
