TORRENTIAL rain is causing rush-hour chaos for drivers across Hampshire.

Part of Millbrook Road West in Southampton has been closed following an incident in which a man was rescued from his car.

Several other roads across the county have been flooded and the emergency are dealing with a spate of accidents - many of which are thought to be weather-related.

Southampton Travel tweeted: "Millbrook Road West has flooding near to Waterhouse Lane junction. Paynes Road outbound on to Millbrook Road west is difficult to pass so please avoid this area if possible."

The Environment Agency added: "IF you're out and about on the roads today please take care, heavy rain and thunderstorms could lead to surface water flooding.

"Remember - don't drive through floodwater, it not worth the risk!"

Congestion has been reported on M271 southbound between Brownhill Way and A33 Redbridge roundabout, with drivers experiencing 15-minute delays.

Traffic is also reported to be slow on Charles Watts Way, Southampton, and Newgate Lane, Fareham, between B3334 and the Peel Common roundabout.

Southampton Central Library is closed today due to flooding, Southampton City Council has said.
