HEAVY rain, thunder and lightning could be seen across Hampshire today, the Met Office has warned.

A yellow weather warning has been issued for a huge swathe of the country.

Between 15mm and 30mm of rainfall could be seen, with as much as 70mm in some places in less than six hours, the Met Office has said.

The warning will be in force from 4am until 11pm on Tuesday.

The Met Office says widespread rain is expected, with some very heavy rain possible, bringing some disruption from flooding.

According to the Met Office, Southampton will see heavy rain during the morning’s rush-hour.

There's a 70 per cent chance of lightning at 9am and a 60 per cent chance of thundery showers between 1pm and 3pm. 

From 4pm, it will be dry with sunny intervals with light rain expected at 7pm. 

A Met Office spokesperson said: “Spells of very heavy rain are expected to move northeastwards across much of England and Wales during Tuesday. Whilst many areas will see some heavy rain with 15-30 mm widely, some places may see up to 70 mm, much of this in a relatively short space of time, typically less than 6 hours. Thunder and lightning is also possible along with strong gusty winds.”

Wednesday is expected to be largely dry with light rain on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Temperatures will range between 17C and 19C this week.
