This Friday September 20, young people are striking from schools and colleges to demand that our Government takes effective action to stop climate breakdown.

For over 30 years we’ve known about human-induced global warming, but very little has been done to stop it.

The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change now says we have just 12 years to take the actions needed to avoid catastrophic climate breakdown. This year, extreme weather events across the world may indicate that climate breakdown is happening even faster than previously thought. We’ve not faced an emergency like this since the Second World War.

The Government needs to take urgent steps to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions to zero, and to stop the destruction of forests and other ecosystems that absorb carbon.

Young people are asking us all to support them on Friday by striking, taking leave from work, or joining them during our lunch break.

Older generations have an especial duty to take action. Please join the climate strikers in Southampton’s Guildhall Square between 11am and 4pm.
