UPDATE 7pm: Highways England say the westbound carriageway will be closed for the 'foreseeable future'.

UPDATE 4.40pm: The eastbound carriageway has now reopened. Westbound still shut.

COMMUTERS are being warned to look for alternative routes home after a crash involving two lorries has closed a major road.

Highways England has confirmed that the both directions of the A303 are shut near the junction for the countess roundabout following the incident at just after 3pm this afternoon.

An air ambulance has been called.

A spokesperson for the ambulance service said: "SWASFT was called at just before 3.15pm to the A303 Amesbury after a road traffic collision involving two lorries.

"We have sent several resources to the scene and are treating one male patient on scene."

Traffic is being diverted off the road and onto London Road in Amesbury.

It is understood cars trapped within the closure area are being given help turning around by Wiltshire Police.
