Sound of the 70s tour with Johnnie Walker follows 60s sell out

It was a sell out hit when earlier this year it stopped off at Eastleigh’s Concorde Club.

Now another record spinning legend is following in the footsteps of his fellow Radio Caroline pirate DJ.

Radio’s 2 Johnnie Walker will next year be taking his Sound of the Seventies show on the road, calling at The Concorde on March 27.

The new live show will showcase his personal stories and memories from the 70s.

There will be a live band and singers performing classic hits from that decade’s hit parade.

Johnnie presents the Sound Of The 70s on Sundays from 3pm to 5pm and The Radio 2 Rock Show on Saturdays from 8pm to 9pm.

He made his name in the 60s with the pirate ship Radio Caroline. His night time show was essential listening for 86% of the night time audience.

It increased to more than 20 million Europe-wide on the night of August 14 1967 as Walker and Caroline continued in defiance of Government legislation which silenced all the others.

During his first seven-year reign with Radio 1 from 1969 to 1976, Johnnie established a reputation as a DJ who accorded more importance to the records he played than the chat in between.

On his lunchtime show he pioneered new names like Steve Harley, Lou Reed, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, and Steely Dan. Pop The Question and the Tuesday Chart Rundown were other well remembered features of the show.

He later moved his turntable across the Atlantic and in California recorded a weekly show which was broadcast on Radio Luxembourg.

Johnnie returned home in the early 80s, and following stints with Radio West and Wiltshire Radio he returned to Radio 1 to present The Stereo Sequence.

He won a huge audience with his legendary Radio 2 Drivetime show which he hosted until March 2006.

In April 2006 he began his Sunday show on Radio 2 reflecting spirituality. That same year he was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List.
