A SOUTHAMPTON care home is set to mark World Alzheimer’s Day in a bid to raise awareness of dementia.

Sunrise of Bassett, Burgess Road, will be championing creative arts for older people by hosting a range of free talks and events on September 24 and September 25.

On September 24 the head of care at Sunrise of Bassett, Francis Bosompim, will be delivering a presentation on how everyone’s perception of dementia can improve the care that healthcare professionals provide to those living with dementia.

The following day will see the care home host a memory care cafe from 2pm to 3.15pm, where residents will be able to meet new people and share experiences. The session will be run in association with The Mayflower Theatre and complimentary refreshments will be provided.

The event will also feature a dementia folk music event on September 25 from 3pm to 4pm, where residents can enjoy an "unforgettable performance", according to the care home.

Director of memory care at Sunrise Senior Living UK and Gracewell Healthcare, Jackie Pool, said: “World Alzheimer’s Day is an opportunity to raise awareness, highlight issues faced by people living with dementia and demonstrate how we can all work together overcome them, to help people live well with the condition.

“We are delighted to be promoting ‘creative arts in dementia care’ this year."

She added: "Our teams have seen first-hand how engaging in arts activities can empower people living with dementia. It enriches life for them and those around them and we have some amazing talent at Sunrise of Bassett.

“As an organisation, we are committed to enhancing the quality of life for residents living with dementia or memory loss and each of the care homes have a tailored activities programme, creative art therapies as well as life-skill-stations that help to stimulate the brain, support a healthy lifestyle and promote a sense of wellbeing and purpose.

“Do contact Sunrise of Bassett to find out what events they have planned this September, to book a tour or drop in for a tea, coffee or a cold drink.”
