SHOPPERS "panicked" and queues were brought to a standstill at a Southampton supermarket on Thursday.
Tills and cash machines stopped working at the Sainsbury's store in Lordshill.
Customers could not buy their weekly shopping due to "technical issues" which caused card transactions to be rejected.
The incident which happened this afternoon went on for "a brief time" but has now been resolved.
One shopper said: "I had just done my shopping and was going to the till when I found that my card had been rejected. I thought it was a bit strange. I tried again and it was rejected. I panicked a bit. I went outside to try met money from the cash machine and they were down too. I realised it was a store problem."
A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said, “We experienced some technical issues for a brief time at our Lords Hill store. This was fixed earlier today and we apologise to customers for any inconvenience this may have caused.”
