THREE naval buildings could be turned into flats as part of a bid to create an attractive new neighbourhood.

Wates Residential has submitted a planning application to Gosport Borough Council for the redevelopment of three vacant naval buildings at the Daedalus site in Lee-on-the-Solent.

The plans aim to convert Frobisher Block and Wykeham Hall into 14 contemporary new apartments and to build 6 new houses, bringing the site back into use to create an attractive new neighbourhood.

Paul Nicholls, manager director for Wates Residential said: “This project offers a fantastic opportunity to uncover the rich history of this site by bringing a number of currently derelict naval buildings back to life, and make them useful for the community once again.

"We have worked long and hard on the design and the result is a proposal that we are proud of as it conserves the naval heritage of the Daedalus site whilst also meeting local housing needs.”

The proposal marks the next phase in the redevelopment of naval base HM Daedalus, where Wates Residential recently topped out on its first new home as part of its 200-home Daedalus Village development.

The proposal details plans for six semi-detached houses, 14 apartments, associated car parking spaces and attractive landscaping.

This has been designed to tie in seamlessly with the wider masterplan for Daedalus and has been developed in partnership with Homes England.

The plans were put on display for the local community in November 2018. Following consultation with the local community and professional bodies, Gosport Borough Council will now consider the planning application.

It is anticipated that a decision will be made in the autumn.
