It was said to have been one of the most successful parades the village had ever seen - Hedge End carnival week came to an end in true style.
The colourful flotilla of floats - ranging from the world of nursery rhymes to the saucy “Confessions of a Driving Instructor” - provided a spectacular eye-catcher for everyone.
Streets were packed as a huge crowd watched the longest procession seen in the village which left organisers predicting that the carnival week finale on July 7, 1979, would bring in well over £1,000 when all sums had been calculated.
True to form, the weather obliged yet again for the mammoth parade which assembled at the St John’s recreation ground.
Greta Trophy for the best local float, excluding schools, went to Hedge End Young Mothers’ Club with their charming interpretation of the “Four Seasons.”
