FRIENDS have launched a fundraising campaign to help a Hampshire teenager who is set to lose a leg following a “horrific” crash.

Motorcyclist Harry Craddock, 17, was left screaming in agony after he was involved in an accident with a car in Southampton earlier this month.

He was rushed to Southampton General Hospital and underwent an emergency operation lasting almost six hours.

But doctors were unable to fully repair the damage and are planning to perform a below-the-knee amputation of his left leg tomorrow to spare him a lifetime of excruciating pain.

Friends and family have launched a campaign to raise £5,000.

Some of the money will be donated to the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, which went to Harry’s aid. The rest of the cash will be used to help him cope with the impact of the life-changing injuries he received in the crash.

Harry, of Church View, Sholing, was riding his Honda 125 when the accident happened in nearby South East Road.

Despite wearing a crash helmet he suffered a fractured skull in the collision as well as damaging a major artery his left foot, which was trapped between his bike and the car.

Speaking from his hospital bed, he said: “I was screaming - the pain was indescribable.

“I was in the operating theatre for five-and-a-half hours. The doctors sorted out the artery and cleaned my leg up, but it will have to be amputated just below the knee.

“Something like this is very hard to come to terms with, especially for someone my age.”

Harry, an apprentice butcher, fears he could be off work for up to a year. He will have to attend numerous rehabilitation sessions in Portsmouth as well as learning to walk again after being fitted with an artificial foot.

Ramps and a stairlift will need to be installed at his home.

Harry praised the huge amount of support he was receiving from family and friends, saying the way they were rallying round had left him feeling “over the moon”.

He added: “It’s really opened my eyes to what life is all about.”
