A WINCHESTER road was ripped up after water pipe burst.

Bereweeke Road is closed near the junction with Andover Road after the pipe burst earlier this afternoon.

It left water pouring down Andover Road, creating traffic problems.

Works are currently taking place to repair the pipe and road, and the closure on Bereweeke Road, between Stockbridge Road and Andover Road, is expected to be in place until around 5am tomorrow (Thursday).

A spokesman for Southern Water said: "We were alerted to a burst on a 12 inch water main on Bereweeke Road, at 1.29pm. "By 2.15pm we had isolated the main and any customers who suffered low pressure or no water would have seen their supplies start to return quickly.

"Our teams are on site and preparing to make a repair. Given the scale of the burst and damage to the roadway, Bereweek Road will have to be closed while full repairs and reinstatement made. We apologise for the disruption suffered by our customers during the burst and to anyone inconvenienced by the road closure.

"We’d like to thank people for their patience while we work as quickly as possible to make a full repair.”
