The Port of Southampton will host the official technical area for the Cowes SailGP event taking place in the Solent at the beginning of August.

The technical area, which will be based in the Eastern Docks at the UK’s number one export port, will be where the 50ft wing sailed catamarans are stored and maintained outside of race times. The port is also a tier two partner of the Cowes SailGP event.

In its inaugural year, the new global championship has so far held races in Sydney, San Francisco and New York and it reaches Cowes as an Official Feature Event of Cowes Week on 10 and 11 August.

The event features teams from six rival nations racing foiling F50 catamarans, capable of breaking sailing’s elusive 50 knot speed barrier.

Alastair Welch, director at the Port of Southampton, said: “We are thrilled to be able to host the SailGP teams during this global sporting event held in the Solent. While the port mainly handles trade across automotive, containers and cruise activities, we work with partners to accommodate additional activities where we can.”

In August, fans are encouraged to head to Cowes to watch the racing from the free-to-access SailGP Race Village situated between Cowes Green and Egypt Point with big screens, live race commentary, stage shows and more.

For those in search of the best views, Grandstand day and weekend tickets are available as well as all inclusive on-water hospitality with SailGP Cruise Premier tickets.

Boat owners can register their own boat to gain access to the inner perimeter or boats can be chartered through one of the Official Charter Companies.
