THE SUN shone for this Hampshire couple on their wedding day.

With more than 100 guests in attendance, Jenny Middleton and Paddy Nineham, 81 and 75 tied the knot at Shirley Baptist Church.

They are the oldest couple to get married at the church so far after being friends for more than 50 years.

Paddy and Jenny were married by assistant pastor Paul Sutton and it was the first wedding he had officiated.

Jenny said that the wedding day on June 28 went very well.

She said: “Unfortunately the car that was supposed to take me to the church broke down on the way to pick me up.

“But my daughter Sheema managed to sort out a white Rolls Royce from Just Rolls to get me there on time.

“It was a beautiful day and it was very emotional.

“I was so relieved we managed to get the car sorted last minute.”

Jenny’s daughter Sheema Byrne, 52, from Southampton said: “It was a lovely day.

“It was hot and the car was stunning and mum looked absolutely amazing.

“It was a very emotional day for everyone.”

Jenny and Paddy first met when Jenny, a former assistant cook was working at the Southampton Chest Hospital alongside her friend Eileen Smith.

Eileen and Paddy were a couple at the time and Jenny became “close friends with both of them”.

Eileen and Paddy married and Jenny married her previous husband Bruce Middleton

Both couples were together for more than 50 years and had a son and daughter each.

Jenny said: “We always kept in touch. We went to each others engagement parties and weddings.

“The four of us were just really good friends.”

Jenny added: “Paddy and Eileen really supported me when Bruce passed away five years ago and I supported Paddy when he lost Eileen two years ago.”

After Eileen’s passing the pair met up for a drive cream tea and Jenny said: “It snowballed from there.

“We have a really good connection.”

Paddy proposed to Jenny a year ago at the knit and natter group that takes place at the church.

She said: “When he proposed everyone at the group was so excited.”

After the wedding Paul who officiated the wedding said: “It went really well and I think both Paddy and Jenny really enjoyed it.

“I was a little bit nervous but it was a great ceremony.”
