THE SPITFIRE in Southampton city centre has a modern-day feel, with spacious interior that makes each customer feel at home.

The pub, located on Above Bar Street, was originally a nightclub called Flares, and was named Revival shortly after.

Its transformation from a club to a pub took place after the “late night economy started dropping off”, according to the manager.

Now, its name – inspired by the iconic plane that was invented and manufactured in the city- adorns the busy town.

It invites all ages alike, including regulars that have visited for years and students that attend the pub for its weekly Saturday night quiz.

Manager Kevin Ashbolt has been running the place for three years and describes The Spitfire as “the nicest place” he’s ever worked. He highlighting its assets of “great value food and drink, a strong homely pub with a friendly team and good location”.

The pub is also a favourite with Saints fans on their way to St Mary’s.

He said: “We are very popular on match days and usually at full capacity before kick-off starts. We appeal to all ages and have DJs here on Friday and Saturdays nights, with drinks-led promotions.”

Its chilled-out, relaxed vibe invites any celebration, from a catch up with friends to a birthday.

Kevin has worked in the pub trade for 13 years and describes the small team of staff he works with at The Spitfire as “wonderful and welcoming”, who have each worked towards the pub’s three-and-a-half-star rating on review website TripAdvisor.

Staff are proud of their annual support for Southampton Pride ahead of the local event on August 24 and sell wristbands to help fundraise for the charity.

According to Kevin, the pub’s most important asset is a “offering fast, good service”.
