A MAN was airlifted to hospital after suffering "multiple puncture wounds" during an attack in Salisbury city centre this evening.

Wiltshire Police says another man, aged 37, has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and is currently in police custody.

The victim, in his 40s, was airlifted to Southampton Hospital in a "serious condition".

Det Sgt Kerry Lawes, from Salisbury CID, said: “We responded swiftly to this incident, made an arrest, and at this stage we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this attack.

“However, the area was busy and we know there will have been people who may have either witnessed the assault itself or who saw something in the aftermath which could assist with our enquiries.

“If you haven’t already spoken to police then please call Salisbury CID on 101, quoting log 312 of today (20/05/19). Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.”

A spokesperson added that officers were at the scene within four minutes and made the arrest shortly afterwards.

It comes after an air ambulance was spotted landing Salisbury's market place this evening.

According to witnesses, the area was cordoned off by police as ambulance crews appear to tend to someone at the scene.

Another person tweeted that Catherine Street was closed by police during the incident.
