A JEALOUS ex who stabbed his former girlfriend's new lover seventeen times in a "brutal" murder attempt has been jailed.

Ashley Peter Luff hid behind a car and jumped his unsuspecting victim as he cycled past.

He then repeatedly knifed his victim during the attack, which took place in Park Gate near Fareham.

Today, Luff, of Bedford Drive, Fareham, was sentenced to 16 years in jail after being found guilty of attempted murder.

Portsmouth Crown Court heard how the attack took place on Southampton Road, Park Gate, on Sunday, August 19, last year.

A video on social media site Facebook showing Luff’s former partner and his victim was shown to the court, which was described as making Luff jealous.

The 32-year-old went after the man and waited behind a parked vehicle and attacked the victim with a knife when he cycled past.

He then stabbed him 17 times.

The victim was taken to Southampton General Hospital for treatment but has since made a full recovery.

Investigating officer DS Mark Edis said: “This was a very serious assault, with both parties known to each other.

"Luff’s actions led to the victim being treated at Southampton General Hospital, thankfully he has recovered from his injuries.

"Today’s sentence sends a clear message that the courts take this kind of violent assault very seriously.

"I hope this outcome helps the victim to move on with his life, safe in the knowledge that Luff will serve a significant sentence.

"We take knife crime very seriously, and we work in partnership with communities, local authorities and other agencies to reduce serious violence.

"Part of this would not be possible if it wasn’t for residents letting us know about suspicious activity in their neighbourhoods.

"The information you give us helps us to build a real picture of what is going on and where we need to focus our resources."
