A SOUTHAMPTON councillor has hit out at a group of vandals who targeted a school for the third time this year.

Councillor Rob Harwood, who represents Bitterne Park on the city council, said: “It is annoying because it is disrupting children’s education and it is anti-social behaviour that the police need to concentrate on.”

Teachers discovered shards of broken glass on May 13 after a group of teenagers used a drain pipe to smash 13 skylight windows at Townhill Junior School, Benhams Road.

Now school staff are appealing to residents to help identify the vandals who struck on May 11 at 2.30pm to prevent future attacks.

The attack on the school comes just days before pupils were due to sit their SATS and teachers estimate the damage will cost thousands to repair.

As previously reported in the Echo, Sian Carr, head teacher of Townhill Junior School, said she was disappointed that the school engages in the community and to have this happen is a real “kick in the teeth”.

Nick Humphries, the deputy head, said: “We have had lots of concern and interest from families mostly passing on their annoyance at what has happened.

“A few parents have offered to help put things right and the community has really pulled together.”

A number of Year Six classrooms were also out of action due to the damage.

Hampshire police have asked anyone with information on the incident to contact the police on 101, quoting 44190164017.
