A HAMPSHIRE MP has said that sacked Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson has been treated unfairly in the Huawei case.

New Forest West MP Sir Desmond Swayne, argues that Mr Williamson has been branded liar without having chance to defend himself.

Mr Williamson was fired by prime minister Theresa May after allegedly leaking information from the National Security Council meeting about Huawei’s involvement in the UK’s 5G network.

This would be a breach of the official secrets acts and politicians on both sides of the house have called for their to a be a police investigation and criminal prosecution

However, Mr Williams denies leaking information to a Daily Telegraph reporter.

Sir Desmond Swayne said: "Outside this House, a right honourable member is being called a liar. And inside this House, a number of honourable members have implied as much.

"Natural justice requires that the evidence is produced so that his reputation can be salvaged or utterly destroyed, doesn't it?"

A host of senior Tory MPs have said Gavin Williamson was the victim of a "kangaroo court" and called for the Prime Minister to publish any evidence of the former defence secretary's wrongdoing.

Responding for the Government, Cabinet Office minister David Lidington said Mrs May had read the report and found "compelling evidence to suggest responsibility" on the part of Mr Williamson for the newspaper report suggesting she was willing to allow Chinese firm Huawei to be involved in the UK's 5G network.

Mr Lidington said Mr Williamson had "not been accused of any criminal offence" but had "lost the confidence of the Prime Minister", who by sacking him "acted within the ministerial code".

New Forest MP Dr Julian Lewis, who chairs the Commons Defence Committee, told the BBC that Gavin Williamson’s sacking as defence secretary is a “loss” when looked at “purely” from the point of view of defence.

“He has been good for defence", the Conservative MP said. However Dr Lewis added: "It probably is inevitable that if someone is caught bang to rights leaking from any cabinet committee” then it’s a career-destroying moment."

Portsmouth North MP Penny Mordaunt has re4palced Mr Williamson, becoming the first woman to hold the office.
