SOUTHAMPTON’S Masterchef Winner Shelina Permalloo will be back but this time joining food critic Jay Rayner and a panel of esteemed foodies on BBC Radio 4 longstanding culinary radio programme Kitchen Cabinet.

Shelina’s won BBC’s MasterChef in 2012 and since winning she spent a few years writing two cookbooks by Ebury Press and Penguin, worked on Sunday Brunch, ITV’s Lorraine and ITV’s This Morning.

She has also opened her very first restaurant in Southampton, called Lakaz Maman, in Bedford Place.

The restaurant is now ranked number one for street food in Southampton.

Shelina said: “I couldn’t think of anywhere else I would rather open up Lakaz Maman than here in Southampton, the city I grew up in – why do new trends always have to open up in London? I love Bedford Place where we opened, it’s full of interesting and quirky independent shops and restaurants, which is important to the city”

On joining the Kitchen Cabinet, Shelina said: “The last time Jay Rayner tasted my food was on MasterChef where he critiqued my Mauritian flavours and said that I seemed to be proud of my heritage – but I was holding back.”

Shelina said she used this as ammunition to make sure that her dishes were truly authentic and reflected the true flavours of the region.

Kitchen Cabinet airs next Saturday where Shelina and the panel will be in Grantham.

They will be discussing a whole range of foodie questions posed by a live audience and a big debate on devilled eggs.

The show airs on BBC Radio 4 on Saturday, May 4, at 10.30am and Tuesday, May 7 ,at 3pm.
