Sadly I don't share our councillors' optimism about the financial benefits to Southampton in hosting an international football match.

The massive salaries of the players won't be spent in the city.

The fans may visit our central pubs, bars and restaurants, but these are owned mainly by national chains rather than by local businesses.

I'm guessing that the profits from food and drink provided at the match won't stay with us, either, neither will those from the sale of flags, hats and other items to show allegiance.

Still, maybe our bus drivers, the local police force and St Mary's regular staff may profit, and hopefully the loyal Saints fans may have a good chance of obtaining tickets to an international match on their doorstep.

So bring it on!
