A BRAND new building providing services for disabled people in Hampshire is to open its doors today.

The recently completed Gold Day Service building will open at the QE2 Activity Centre in the River Hamble Country Park.

Located in Bursledon, the building includes an activity space; a sensory room and a specially adapted toilet.

A sensory room is a special room to develop a person's senses, usually through special lighting, music, and objects.

The opening takes place today at 1pm.

It will be an opportunity to see the building, view some of the activities carried out there and meet people who use the services.

QE2 Activity Centre was established in 1978 to provide activity opportunities for people with disabilities.

Day services at QE2 Activity Centre are designed to help people develop independent living skills and work skills.

Opening the building on the day will be the Mayor of Eastleigh, Bruce Tennant.

In advance of the opening, Bruce said: “I have visited the QE2 Activity Centre before and it is fantastic. I am very much looking forward to opening the new building. There are not enough of these facilities about and money is always difficult to find. It adds a lot of value to the community."

The activity centre offers a range of activities for all abilities including canoeing, motor boating, ropes course, zip wire, walking, climbing and archery.

Centre manager Phil Oates said: “A lot of work has gone into making this happen and a lot of people have contributed in all kinds of ways. We are very grateful to all of them.

"Seeing the building in use makes all the effort worthwhile.

"The Sensory Room is already proving very popular and the Changing Places bathroom means that we accessible for everyone.”

From 9.30am until 3.30pm every weekday they offer a mix of activities designed to develop work and independent living skills and promote active leisure and healthy lifestyles.

Visitors can learn about healthy eating, food hygiene, shopping and budgeting.

They can also develop literacy, numeracy and IT skills.
