A BATTLE of Britain Victoria Cross winner will be remembered in the city.
Students of Sholing Junior School have spent the last four years organising a memorial in Southampton for James Brindley Nicolson, as there has been no memorial to him in the city.
He defended Southampton from attack, and was the only one of nearly 3,000 aircrew who fought in the Battle of Britain that was awarded the Victoria Cross for gallantry.
The plaque was unveiled on the Solent University building on Guildhall Square today, with a parade from the RAF, wreath and flower laying and a talk from his nephew, Jim.
Jim Nicolson said: "I am absolutely thrilled to be a part of the process.
"It's wonderful and the children have done an amazing job getting the memorial in place.
"I'm delighted for them for raising the profile of all the fighter pilots up and down the country."
Richard Hutchinson, deputy headteacher at Sholing Junior School, said: "It's taken four years, and I'm proud of them.
"This is the end of an era for the children.
"It's been difficult for them to get through but I'm proud of them and their resilience.
"They never gave up and it's great to have it on a prominent location, and they'll go away and do a lot in the future as a result."
