POLICE have launched an appeal after a man suffered what is being described as a "puncture wound" in a suspected assault in a city centre park.

Officers have taped off part of Hoglands Park, in Southampton, following an incident this afternoon.

Police say they believe the incident was an assault, from which a man suffered a puncture wound to his arm.

Officers say they were called to St Mary's Place in Southampton at 1.20pm today (Saturday, March 23) by South Central Ambulance Service, who were treating a 21 year-old man for the injury.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: "The man appears to have been assaulted and has been taken to hospital for treatment.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish what happened and officers will be patrolling the area.

"Anyone with any information or concerns can speak to one of these uniformed officers."
