THERE are just weeks until ABP Southampton Marathon 2019 gets underway.

Once again the city will see 10,000 runners pound the streets in the marathon, half marathon, or 10k distance on May 5.

Up to 30,000 spectators are expected to line the route and clap, cheer and shout runners on.

It is estimated last year that £1million was spent in Southampton as a result of the event.

There’s still time to enter and organisers are keen to make sure the event showcases the best the city has to offer.

Nikki Rees, director of the ABP Southampton Marathon, said: “With only 50 days to go until the big day, we are super excited for everyone to see what’s in store for them.

"This year is going to be bigger and better than last year with the event falling on a bank holiday, participants can rest on Monday and see the city. We are working closely with the local businesses to help runners “make a weekend of it” when they come to Southampton.

"Along with the marathon, the half marathon and the 10k, we also have a fun run for families to take part in. The city will be packed with more supporters, spectators and runners than ever before so expect a great atmosphere.

"There’s still time to sign up, if you haven’t already.”

The closing date for sign-ups is Sunday, March 24, with an extended deadline for charity sign-ups. So far £750,000 has been raised for charities including Macmillan Cancer Support, and Southampton Hospital Charity.

Heidi Isa, Marketing and Events Director for Go! Southampton, said “We are excited to be supporting the marathon again this year, working with Rees Leisure to help runners and their supporters make the most of their time in the city while at the same time helping our local businesses utilise of the opportunities the marathon brings to them.”
