A SOUTHAMPTON man spent the night in the cells, because he didn't pay a £3.80 train ticket.

Nadir Shah was caught without a ticket while at Southampton Airport Parkway.

He told staff he was attempting to get to Southampton Central Station on a South Western Railway train – a trip which costs £3.80.

After being quizzed about the whereabouts of his ticket, the 39-year-old said he needed the toilet.

He then ran away.

Shah was due to appear at Southampton Magistrates' Court last month, but failed to attend and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

He was arrested on Tuesday evening, before appearing in court on Wednesday morning.

Shah, of Northumberland Road, Southampton, pleaded guilty to failing to pay for a train ticket.

Magistrates decided not to punish Shah, in lieu of his 12 hours spent in the cells of the court.
