A MAN who climbed into the window of a Southampton flat “looking for a place to sleep” left with a games console because he “needed money for food”.

Jakub Kula stole an Xbox from his victim’s flat after climbing through an open window, and sold it to a pawn shop.

In a separate incident, Kula was seen walking up the driveways of a number of properties and looking through the windows.

When stopped by police, the 37-year-old was caught with a crowbar and a quantity of amphetamine.

Southampton Crown Court heard the first incident took place when Kula was spotted looking into windows of homes in South Mill Road, Millbrook.

Police were called and stopped Kula, who was carrying a bag, which contained a crowbar, a screwdriver, several bottles of alcohol and a quantity of amphetamine.

He was first arrested on suspicion of being equipped for theft, but was later charged and pleaded guilty to possession of a class-B drug.

The court heard that Kula was also arrested following a burglary in Carlton Crescent overnight on August 8.

Kula entered through a window, which was left ajar while the homeowner was away for two days, and stole an Xbox, which he pawned.

The court heard the homeowner’s brother was in the flat but did not hear the incident.

Mitigating, Alejandra Tascon said Kula had originally entered the property “looking for a place to sleep”.

She said: “When he went in there he took goods from the property because he wanted to buy food for himself because he hadn’t eaten for a couple of days.”

Ms Tascon said Kula’s life had fallen apart since separating from his wife, and he had turned to amphetamines.

She added that Kula was “ashamed” of his actions.

He pleaded guilty to burglary, possession of a class-B drug and two counts of thefts of bicycles.

Judge Nicholas Rowland sentenced Kula, of Burlington Road, Southampton, to 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years.

He was also ordered to complete a six-month drug rehabilitation course and 100 hours of unpaid work.
