A HAMPSHIRE woman lashed out at a police dog handler who came to the scene following reports of a man carrying a knife in the street.

Colleen Royal repeatedly swung punches towards officer Daniel Lane, as he attempted to keep her away from his police dog, Rusty.

One of the punches caught the officer, sparking Rusty to bite Royal.

Appearing at Southampton Magistrates’ Court, Royal pleaded guilty to assaulting an officer.

Prosecutor Liam Hunter told the court how the incident happened in July last year, near to Royal’s home in Cheltenham Gardens, Hedge End.

PC Lane was deployed after reports of a man carrying knife.

But on arrival he was confronted by Royal, who was said to be “in drink”.

Royal threw a number of punches towards PC Lane, one which connected with his shoulder.

PC Lane continued to push the 38-year-old back, once to the floor, fearing that Rusty may bite Royal – which he eventually did.

Royal was later arrested by police.

In mitigation, Jamie Gammon said Royal had difficulties with mental health and potential adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which he said could explain her behaviour.

He added that Royal was not currently in work and was receiving Universal Credit.

Magistrates imposed a 12 month community order on Royal, including a six-month alcohol treatment requirement.

She was also fined £100 and ordered to pay £185 in court costs.
