AN INVESTIGATION is underway after a police officer has been stabbed in the back in a Hampshire park.

The incident took place in Stamshaw Park in Portsmouth at around 12:20pm today whilst the officer was on patrol in Newcomen Road.

The officer has been taken to hospital with non life threatening injuries and police say his next of kin have been informed.

A spokesperson from Hampshire Police said: "We do not believe there is any wider risk to the community at this time.

"A man has been arrested and is currently in police custody.

"Investigations are ongoing.

"Anyone who saw what happened or has any information about the incident is asked to call us on 101, quoting 44190063033."
