A MASTERCHEF winner will be in Southampton tomorrow to help get people talking about mental health.

Winner of the 2012 BBC series Shelina Permalloo will be sharing some of her celebrated dishes at Westquay South at part of national Time to Talk Day.

She will be joined at noon tomorrow by mental health groups Time to Change, Solent Mind, Radian Homes, No Limits, Samaritans, Southampton Voluntary Services, Carers in Southampton and Southampton City Libraries.

The event is organised by Southampton City Council, which has signed up to the Time to Change employer pledge to show its support for mental health and wellbeing.

Statistics show one in four people experiences mental health problems at some point in their life.

MasterChef winner Shelina Permalloo said: “Talking to others about mental health can sometimes be tricky. That is why I’ve put together some delicious recipes for people to share and have a chat with each other about mental health and get some free advice from the charities who will joining me at Westquay on Time to Talk Day.

“So, please pop over on Thursday to the mall on your lunch break and enjoy something sweet and share your own story on our conversation tree note board.”

Cllr David Shields, cabinet member for community health and wellbeing added: “Mental health and wellbeing is now a national priority.

“What better way to get more familiar with ways to improve your mental wellbeing than to enjoy one of Shelina’s tasty treats, chat with a work colleague or family member and learn more about local resources?”
