TWO new machines will help to create more room at Southampton by stacking the containers higher.

DPWorld, which operates the container terminal, has taken delivery of two new Hyster machines, which can tandem lift two empty 40ft containers and stack higher than the terminal’s current machines.

Over the next two years, DPWorld Southampton will invest in four more machines and completely replace its existing fleet with the most fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly machines on the market.

The Hysters, built in Nijmegen, Holland, are compliant to the latest euro emission standards and will bring greater levels of efficiency to the business.

They are part of a project to redevelop the terminal’s empty park.

Nick Loader, UK chief operating officer, DP World, said: “This investment in new equipment is part of our strategy to continually review our assets, infrastructure and performance, so that we can deliver the best possible service and productivity to our customers in a sustainable way.”

Later this year, DP World will take delivery of 12 new hybrid straddle carriers from Kalmar to improve the terminal’s ship to shore handling of laden boxes.
