EASTLEIGH council have launched their new year fitness initiative.

Couch to 5K is the council’s New Year fitness initiative which is designed for anyone who is feeling out of shape or unfit and who wants to take up physical activity.

The initiative is designed for beginners and with sessions using a mix of running and walking, gradually building up to a steady jog.

Organised through the council’s SportWorks programme, this new course is sponsored by Running Mania, organisers of the annual Eastleigh 10K road race which takes place next year on Sunday, 24 March, 2019.

Cllr Tonia Craig cabinet member for Health and Community Safety said: “We’re delighted to be able to offer this Couch to 5K course through our SportWorks programme and in partnership with Running Mania.

“This is a fantastic way to help and encourage anyone trying to get active or who is returning to exercise after a time away. The course is especially designed to take a complete beginner and coach them safely through to becoming a regular runner.

“We know there are many health benefits associated with taking part in regular exercise but a course like this empowers a person; it helps them to build confidence and mental and physical wellbeing which has a social impact.

“What a way to kick start the New Year!”

Steve Collins from Running Mania added: "We are delighted to be supporting the Couch to 5k initiative that provides the opportunity for local people to become more active through running.

"We know that doing a little exercise can really improve your health and wellbeing. Running is becoming increasingly popular and this beginners' group is an easy and great way to start."

The eight-week Couch to 5K course will start on Monday, 7 January and will meet at Places Leisure Eastleigh. Sessions will take place Mondays and Thursdays from 7pm to 8pm.

It costs £35, with bookings being taken from November 26.
