A HAMPSHIRE library is to close to undergo a £30,000 facelift.

Lockswood Library in Locks Heath, is to shut after Christmas for the work to start. The County Council executive member for recreation and heritage, Councillor Seán Woodward, said: “Lockswood Library will have a fantastic start to 2019 following the raft of improvements we’re making.

"Customers will be able to quickly and easily borrow, renew and return items thanks to the arrival of self-service technology kiosks.

“Alongside introducing the latest technology, we’re investing in the building itself to make sure it’s up to date, with fresh decoration and new carpets.

“We’re committed to ensuring our libraries keep pace with the needs of customers, and continue to thrive as popular venues for learning, study and community activities. We’re working hard to transform many library interiors so that the spaces can be used in the most broad and flexible ways, including children’s activities, events and interest groups.”

The work includes:

•Changes to the layout, updated carpets and decoration

•Introduction of self-service technology kiosks for customers to quickly and easily borrow and return items

•New mobile shelving so the space can be used flexibly for children’s activities, events and learning

•New furniture

Lockswood Library will be closed from December 28 to February 11 before reopening on February 12.

During the closure, customers can use nearby Stubbington, Lee on the Solent, Fareham and Netley libraries.

Customers can borrow up to 30 books prior to December 28 and books will not be subject to fines or charges during the closure.

This investment in Lockswood Library forms part of the library service’s strategy to 2020 and a commitment to reinvest £500,000 a year, from the county development fund, until 2019, into library buildings and technology.
