THE Queen’s royal train swept smoothly into Southampton where she was met by a wealth of city and county leaders.
After arriving at the station in glorious sunshine on December 6, 1974, Her Majesty left in a maroon Rolls-Royce for the 400-yard drive to the civic centre.
Here she went for a ten-minute walk to meet with citizens before sitting down to lunch at the Guildhall.
In the afternoon the Queen opened the first stage of the Southampton Teaching Hospital, and unveiled a commemorative stone.
