A MULTI-vehicle accident has closed the southbound carriageway of a Hampshire motorway.

Five vehicles were involved in the collision, which occurred near the bottom of the sliproad at Junction 1 of the M271 at Nursling, Southampton.

One woman had to be cut free by Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.

A police spokesman said: "We were called at 4.04pm to reports of a collision on the M271 southbound.

"A Renault Captur, Vauxhall Meriva, Ford Transit van, Honda Civic, and Citroen Berlingo were involved.

"A closure is currently in place and recovery has been arranged for the vehicles. The incident is ongoing."

South Central Ambulance Service said a woman in her 40s was being treated at the scene but might have to go to hospital.

The closure is causing delays for southbound drivers leaving the M27 at Junction 3. Congestion in the area is expected to increase as the rush-hour gets under way.
