A DRIVER was arrested after a lorry became stuck under a railway bridge.

As previously reported Romsey was brought to a standstill on Tuesday after a skip lorry owned by Ace Liftaway hit the bridge in Greatbridge Road shortly after noon.

The road was closed in both directions due to the collision and all railway lines between Salisbury and Romsey were blocked.

Now Hampshire police have confirmed that the driver of the lorry, a Southampton man, was arrested on suspicion of impairment.

A spokesperson for the force said: “The man, who is in his 30s, has been released under investigation.”

A spokesperson for ACE Liftaway said the company is helping the police with an ongoing investigation.

As previously reported, the bridge in Greatbridge Road has seen more than its fair share of mishaps.

Residents said dozens of lorries have got stuck under the bridge in Greatbridge Road over the past 10 years.

Following the latest incident residents have called for action to be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.

On Tuesday evening councillor Dorothy Baverstock, mayor of Romsey, said she will discuss the issue at the next full council meeting at the Town Hall.

Now she added: “I have total faith in the police and I am sure they will deal with with. What I don’t have faith in is the lorry drivers’ possibly not being able to read the signage. But as a town council we need to try to get to the bottom of why it is occurring still and maybe we need to do a review of the signage because when this sort of thing happens it brings Romsey to a standstill.”

As previously reported, the Road Haulage Association (RHA), has now launched a scheme with the Department for Transport in a bid to educate lorry drivers and make sure they know the height of their lorries.
