FORMER Olympic athlete Iwan Thomas spent the night at St Mary’s after agreeing to take part in the Big Stadium Sleep Out.

Iwan was among more than 90 fundraisers who camped out at the home of Southampton FC to raise cash for the club’s charity - the Saints Foundation - and The Big Issue Foundation.

The Welsh sprinter represented Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the Olympics and Wales at the Commonwealth Games.

He lives in Southampton and is a Saints Foundation Ambassador.

Speaking just before the event a Saints spokesman said: “The Big Stadium Sleep Out will provide an interesting and thought-provoking insight into the lives of people who are homeless.

“In addition it’s a great event to meet like-minded people, share a transformational experience and be a social activist.”

Iwan won silver in the 4x400 at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.

His other medal triumphs included gold at the World Championships in Athens in 1997 and the European Championships in Budapest in 1998.
