A BABY met a violent end after it was severely bitten on its nose, a jury has been told.

The six-week-old boy suffered "non-survivable" injuries to his face, arms, legs, hands and feet following the incident at a flat in Southampton.

Winchester Crown Court was told that a 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, assaulted the baby after he had been out drinking at a party.

Prosecutor Adam Feest QC told the jury that the baby had been "violently shaken or swung" in the hours before he died at 5.45am on February 11.

The male defendant, who is on trial along with a 19-year-old woman, who is accused of child neglect, said that the injuries the baby sustained were either from the baby accidentally falling off the sofa when he was having his nappy changed, or falling out of his arms, Mr Feest told the court.

The court was told that the two defendants had been drinking at a nearby gathering until around 1.30am.

Witnesses say the pair, as well as a 13-year-old who was with them, had drunk a 70c bottle of vodka and a case of Budweiser before they returned back to the female defendant's flat.

The prosecution say that between a two-hour period after the party, the baby then suffered "deliberate injury".

Mr Feest QC said: "At 2.30am there is evidence to show the baby was fit and well but by 4.20am he was far from that.

"The crown says that during this period whether in a fit of temper or otherwise, the [male] defendant inflicted injury caused to the baby’s face, arms, legs, a bite to the nose and injury to the hand and feet.

"We say these injuries taken both individually and together cannot be accidental."

Neighbours described hearing "a gut wrenching cry of pain coming from a baby."

One neighbour added that after a short period of quiet, further screaming was heard, which "turned her stomach".

Another local, who lives in a nearby flat, also heard loud banging and screaming.

Both defendants deny the charges.

The trial continues.
