MORE than 200 trains were cancelled across the South Western Railway network this morning due to overrunning engineering works.

Train services through Bournemouth were among those affected by the works in the Hampton Court area which were still ongoing during the morning rush-hour.

All lines were closed between Surbiton and Waterloo and South Western Railway advised people not to travel.

Trains were unable to leave the Wimbledon or Clapham Junction depots as a result.

Lines reopened shortly after 9.30am, but disruption is expected to last for the rest of the day.

Passengers are able to use Cross Country services between Bournemouth and Reading.

In a joint apology, Becky Lumlock, Network Rail's managing director - Wessex and Andy Mellors, managing director, South Western Railway, said: “We are very sorry for the serious disruption to your journeys earlier this morning due to overrunning engineering works in the Surbiton area.

“All lines were closed between Surbiton and Waterloo whilst we worked hard to complete the work so we could safely reopen the lines.

“Soon after 0930 the lines were open again, however many of you will have had delayed and crowded journeys for the rest of the day.

“We know it’s not the service you deserve, and we are working hard to resolve these issues.”
